Position Location: Remote, must be compatible with East Coast USA. 

Direct Report: Editorial & Outreach Manager.

Salary: $60,000-$65,000 Pro Rata depending on experience and location.

In addition, full-time employees receive:

About Sentient: 

Sentient is a nonprofit news organization that publishes stories and solutions to explain factory farms and their effect on climate, animals, public health, politics and more. 

Founded in 2018, Sentient’s content is fact-checked and science-driven, with reporting that serves readers who are interested in the impacts of what they eat on animals, climate, water, conditions for workers — and so much more. 

Our content is available free of charge, without a paywall or advertisers. Our donors and board have no editorial influence on content. Through training and partnerships, Sentient also works to boost informed media coverage of factory farming.

Position Overview: 

This is an exciting opportunity to build on Sentient’s social media channels and take them to the next level. The social media manager is responsible for strategy, monitoring, managing, creating visuals and posts for all Sentient social channels (X/Mastodon/Facebook/Instagram/Linkedin/TikTok/Youtube). This also includes paid campaigns and newsletter marketing. 

The social media manager will be responsible for growth of our channels in line with Sentient’s mission and strategy.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties: 

  • Manage, monitor, create content for and analyze performance for all Sentient’s social media channels. 
  • Work with Editorial & Outreach Manager on paid ads strategy and optimization. 
  • ​Generate content in Canva and in writing that engages the target audience and leads to measurable action. Eg. newsletter signups, event attendance, building audience. 
  • Implement strategies to create momentum and awareness, and continuously improve mission-building and brand storytelling.
  • Coordinate webpage and social media maintenance—ensure that new and consistent information (article links, stories, and events) is posted regularly.
  • Track and measure the level of engagement within  networks over time.

Position Requirements:

  • Passion for social media and the potential to reach bigger audiences with Sentient’s content.
  • Strong analytical skills and willingness to act fast on trends. 
  • Minimum two years of communications experience developing and implementing communications strategies.
  • Experience (or desire to learn) fundraising through social media and communications. 
  • Experience managing paid social media campaigns. 
  • Willingness to embrace or experience working with tools such as AI and social media scheduling and tracking software. 
  • Experience independently planning, coordinating and managing complex communication strategies.
  • Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven success in growing online communities, building brand awareness, engaging audiences and driving traffic.
  • Highly effective organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in communications management and best practices across social media, websites and traditional media outlets
  • Creative in finding new ways to convey our message
  • Understanding of and curiosity about the media landscape as it relates to animal agriculture. 
  • Understanding of and curiosity about the key journalists and top social media accounts covering climate, science, agriculture, justice and health.  

Social Media Manager Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in bi-weekly team meetings, bi-weekly meetings with editorial & outreach manager, monthly pitch meetings, bi-weekly coordination meetings with department leads and any other meetings required to maintain and further the success of the social media channels. 
  • Produce, schedule, monitor and engage with daily posts for all social media channels and content streams (mon-fri).
  • Support fundraising efforts, eg. Giving Tuesday and End of Year giving. 
  • Support and assist where necessary in newsletter design and content. 
  • Produce threads in a timely manner to respond to trending topics relevant to Sentient.  
  • Design thumbnails and test graphics in line with Sentient brand guidelines. 
  • Work with fellow staff on improving public engagement and identify opportunities for new readership, including new audiences and topic areas.
  • Research developments in animal agriculture and other animal industries for fresh stories and news-making developments.

Position Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (or four years professional experience in the field). 
  • Passion for social media. 
  • Commitment to fact-checking social content. 
  • Strong substantive social media management experience for a news or science media outlet.
  • Flexibility and ability to work closely with a small team.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to work on a tight timeline.
  • Strong work ethic and a commitment to the objectives of the organization.
