Sentient Media is a nonprofit journalism organization committed to changing the conversation around animal agriculture in mainstream media. We do so by publishing a wide variety of content focusing on five key pillars: science, climate, agriculture, justice and health.

In the past two years, our work has reached more than 50 million people with the help of our Writers’ Collective, an online community of aspiring writers, journalists and advocates, as well as our growing team of digital marketing specialists.

 

Position Overview: 

 

Sentient Media’s Editors are responsible for fact-checking, writing and editing compelling articles and newsletters covering research, public policies, investigations, debates and developments relating to animal agriculture and its impacts, including human rights, human health, animal health and well-being, the climate and environment and matters of justice.

 

Freelance Assistant Editor Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Participate in pitch meetings and assist writers and fellows as requested by the Managing Director
  • Edit a minimum of 2 SEO and 1 reported articles per week 
  • Draft and submit 3 newsletters per week
  • Research developments in animal agriculture and other animal industries for fresh stories and news-making developments
  • Fact-check articles for the managing editor
  • Collaborate with fellow staff on visual and graphic opportunities arising from your editing
  • Work with fellow staff on improving public engagement and identify opportunities for new readership, including new audiences and topic areas

 

Position Requirements: 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Strong journalism experience, especially fact-checking 
  • Strong substantive editing experience for a news or science media outlet
  • Flexibility in receiving assignments and ability to work closely with a small team
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to work on a tight timeline
  • Strong work ethic and a commitment to the objectives of the organization

About the role: 

Board members at Sentient Media provide essential support, oversight, and strategic guidance to a small and dedicated global team.

Board members maintain a vision for the organization and ensure the effectiveness of the projects and programs implemented.

We are seeking one new board member who is personally committed to the mission of ending animal agriculture and understands the effectiveness of the media in influencing behavioral change.

Ideal candidates will have demonstrated this commitment by contributing their time, money, or expertise to the farmed animal protection movement.

We have specific needs for candidates with nonprofit media experience and fundraising.

Sentient Media currently has three board members, including a treasurer and a secretary.

We are seeking applications on an ongoing basis and will discuss potential candidates at our quarterly board meetings.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Attend four (4) full board meetings each calendar year.
  • Agree to a two-year board term with the possibility of renewal for a second 2-year term.
  • Follow the ethical guidelines and mission of Sentient Media.
  • Be knowledgeable about Sentient Media’s mission, strategic plan, programs, and events.
  • Fundraise on behalf of the organization and help ensure adequate financial resources.
  • Commit to give or raise a financial contribution to Sentient Media.
  • Participate in hiring, oversight process, and support of Sentient Media’s Executive Director.
  • Review and approve the annual budget.
  • Avoid conflicts of interest and fully comply with the board’s Conflict of Interest Policy and other policies on individual conduct.
  • Conduct affairs of the board including board development, transition, and effectiveness.
  • Perform annual, individual self-evaluation of board service.

Qualifications: 

  • Media experience ideally in nonprofit journalism.
  • Strong, demonstrated commitment to Sentient Media’s mission, goals, and objectives.
  • Commitment to enhance Sentient Media’s public standing through community advocacy.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Strong leadership and planning skills.
  • Maintain a high level of legal and ethical integrity.
  • Analytical and sound decision-making ability.
  • Ability to organize and work collaboratively with other board members, staff, consultants, and volunteers.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in nonprofit finance, public policy, legislation, nonprofit management, law, or fundraising.
  • Experience serving on a nonprofit board.
  • Experience reviewing non-profit financial statements and budgets.
  • Executive experience at an organization of similar size, particularly a nonprofit organization.
