Meet Sentient’s new hires: two investigative reporters, a fact checker and science journalism fellow.
Words by Jenny Splitter
Sentient is thrilled to begin 2025 with an announcement of the incredible people joining our editorial team. We are welcoming two stellar investigative journalists, Nina Elkadi and Grey Moran, and our fellow Gabriella Sotelo will be moving into a new role, fact checker, while another former student-fellow, Dawn Attride, will be joining us for a year-long science journalist fellowship.
Soon to be based in Durham, North Carolina, Moran is an award-winning journalist who was most recently a staff writer for Civil Eats. They have also written for The Guardian, the Atlantic and the New York Times, among other publications. “I am very honored to be joining the team at Sentient, the only journalism outlet devoted to investigating factory farms.”
Elkadi’s work explores corporate influence within the agricultural industry, the environmental impacts of factory farming, and the many forms of negligence impacting consumers and workers. Elkadi, who splits time between her hometown of Iowa City and Washington, DC, tells Sentient, “I can’t wait to work on a team dedicated to accountability.”
“I’m particularly excited about reporting on the community-level impacts of factory farms, including on air and water quality, the health and safety of farmworkers and rural agricultural economics,” says Moran. “There’s so much to learn from the way we treat animals; in many ways, I consider it a mirror into how we treat each other and the planet.”
Elkadi’s work has appeared in National Geographic, Inside Climate News and Civil Eats, among other publications. “Decisions made on the field, in feedlots, within processing facilities and in the boardroom affect everyone from farmworkers to consumers,” says Elkadi. “Readers have a right to know the inner workings of a deliberately secretive industry that impacts their everyday lives.”
Two of our team members will also be moving into new roles. Dawn Attride, a recent graduate of New York University’s Science, Health and Environmental Reporting program, will join Sentient as a full-time science editorial fellow this month. “I’m looking forward to further uncovering the many ways food systems directly affect and overlap with climate, public health and more,” Attride tells Sentient.
And last but certainly not least, Gabriella Sotelo, who is completing a year-long fellowship with Sentient, will move into a permanent role as fact checker. “I’m really excited to continue working alongside such a dedicated group of people focused on everything to do with factory farming,” Sotelo tells Sentient. She is also excited to be working closely with the new investigative team: “I’m looking forward to expanding our fact checking process and ensuring we get every detail right.”
